Hearing protection while shooting?

I do a lot of vermin eradication (rabbits/foxes mostly) and make use of a combo gun. (.22lr/.410 shot over under by savage arms) It would be nice to be able to listen for fox calls etc while hunting, without the risk of hearing damage from the 410. However in this particular state of Australia, Silencers and suppressors are illegal. Can anyone suggest a way that I could protect my hearing while still being able to listen out for those subtle sounds of movement in the hedge lines and box thorns?
