Do i have to go to civil coart?

My bf and I lived together. My name was not on the lease but everything I own is in that apartment and I get mail there. I left friday to go to my mothers and help myself get away bc the relationship is very unhealthy. He is not happy. All I want are some clothes, toiletries, laptop, and my college books. I am willing to give up all my furniture bc it is just stuff and I can replace it. He refuses to give it to me and keeps saying `lets just go to coart its a civil matter`. Can I call a cop and at least get the couple of things I want or am I screwed bc my name is not on the lease?
