What are some small low maintence pets that can be played with?

I really want some sort of small pet, nothing aquatic. But I'm not looking in to a 10 year life contract with a rabbit lets say. Just something small that unfortuneatley wont last super long, but i dont like mice, or hamsters or any vermin. I heard turtles are good like the mini ones, but on a few websites it says they dont like to be played with. i want something i can come home to , take it out of its cage and just play with it you know?
