What should I paint the walls?

My husband picked out dark red curtains for our apartment's living room. It's the only thing he insisted on, so I don't want to change them. The carpet is a tan and the walls are currently off-white. The furniture is all wooden, mostly lighter. I'd like to paint the room a bright color, but I'm not sure what wouldn't clash. I was thinking a gold, or a gray for default. It's a large room with two windows, so natural light is there, and I don't want to overpower it with really dark colors for everything.
