Making black furniture lighter?

I have a black CD cabinet that I want to change the color to a walnut. Since it is factory done I don't think trying to strip the paint will work. I guess it's plywood and the black has been sealed in. Can I paint it white and then put a wood conditioner on it and then stain it with an oil based walnut stain?
